Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Mother’s Day is Sunday! If you’re in need of a special something to show Mom all of your gratitude and love, I can assure you that we have just the thing.

The store is literally bursting with great new things, many of which we know your Mom would love! To give you an idea of what’s in store here’s a handy little gift guide of some of our top picks for Mom!

You can never go wrong with Tokyo Milk. We’re especially enamoured with their hand creams. Made from shea butter and crushed and distilled essences, these all natural hand creams will leave Mom’s hands silky smooth and smelling divine!

Available in five different scents, $19.95 each

Is your Mom queen of the Kitchen? Check out these 100% cotton tea towels! We love the fresh colours and detailed sea creature images that adorn these super durable and absorbent towels.

$6.50 each

Do you have a green thumb Mom? How about gifting her with a new addition to her plant family? We have some beautiful planters in the shop that are great for indoors and out. Just pop in a plant and voila!

Green ceramic planters $12.95-$18.95, terra cotta planters $12.75-$21.95, sap bucket planters $22.00

Pheylonian 100% beeswax candles are a wonder product that make a beautiful gift. They have a lovely natural smell, and warm long-burning honey coloured flame. These clean burning candles actually purify the air as they burn, and help with dust and allergies. We like the idea of pairing some of the beeswax tea lights with one of our glass lanterns, or our adorable tulip tea light holders!

Candles $1.35-$41.95, candle holders $4.95-42.75

We’re loving this Fiesta inspired collection of ceramic wares that we just got in the shop. We have ceramic colanders, citrus juicers, pitchers, and mixing bowls in bright, summery colours. Any of these fun pieces would make a great gift.

From $21.95-$27.50

There are so many other wonderful things in the shop at the moment, I can’t share it all with you here. Visit us this week and let us help you find that perfect gift for Mom!

Ocean Side Dream Home

For a few weeks in April we were back in the South Shore/Indian Harbour region to work on a fun project for long time customers of ours. Their gorgeous home is set right on the harbour and has 180 degrees of ocean views.

A few years ago we refreshed a built-in media unit and wet bar in their living room. It had been painted a periwinkle colour that really clashed with the rest of the decor. The mission was to create a finish that complemented the ocean side setting as well as their stone work fireplace made up of local beach rocks. To integrate this large piece into its surroundings we went with a painted antiqued finish in this pale grey driftwood inspired colour. Much better!

Recently these homeowners built a guest bunkie over top of their garage. They did a great job of maximizing this small space and making it into a functioning guest house with a kitchenette, washroom and two built-in captains beds. They wanted to inject some colour and character into this new space, so once again they called in the henhouse team!

We worked with the customers to come up with an intense watery blue colour scheme then we set to work! We distressed, painted, and antique glazed the kitchen cabinetry, bathroom vanity, and the stairwell. We also whitewashed the trim around the doors and windows. Above you can see the kitchenette in its before and after stages.

Here you can see the stairwell that we re-finished, a close-up of the whitewashed trim, and the built-in beds.

The bathroom vanity is made from an old cabinet that we painted and glazed. The front drawer is still being retrofitted to accommodate the plumbing. It’s such a sweet piece, and perfect for this small space!

After two weeks of hard work, the guest bunkie now has the beautiful rustic chic look that henhouse specializes in! It’s all ready for the customer to add their own finishing touches to complete the look.

Whoa Baby!

Hi friends!

We hope you’re enjoying the first signs of spring- the buds on the trees, the few extra hours of daylight, and the warmer temperatures (most days anyhow!). New life is happening all around at this time of year- including new babies! A lot of our regular customers have been in lately showing off their new little ones and, our own Sappho is expecting her third child in just a few weeks!! Needless to say, it’s an exciting time here at henhouse!

Are any of you expecting a new family member soon?

Well, if you happen to be in need of a gift for your own little one or for someone you know who is expecting, we have some really sweet things in the shop!

We love, love, LOVE all of the baby clothes from Parade. Cuteness aside, these outfits are made by a Canadian company from 100% organic cotton, and are pesticide and chemical-free. They are safe for your baby and our environment! Sizes range from 0-3 months up to 12-18 months.

Babies and food…things get messy!  These Mally bibs will do the trick! Made in Canada from 100% baby safe leather, these bibs wash easily with the wipe of a cloth and will last for years! They have a unique adjustable magnet clasp, so you can widen it as your baby grows. These make a really great gift!

For  most new parents, sleep is a sought after luxury. Luna Lullaby swaddling  blankets can help! Swaddling is the ancient technique of snugly wrapping your baby in a way that simulates the feeling of being in the womb.  It’s soothing for babies, and it can help them sleep longer and more comfortably.

Everyone needs a life-long pal, and these sock monkeys are just that. Each monkey is lovingly hand made in Nova Scotia. They come in all shapes and sizes,  and  have their own unique personalities! We think they make a great toy for the young as well as the young at heart!

Thanks for reading! Visit us this weekend- it’s supposed to be great sunny weather (read: perfect for shopping at local small businesses!!)

Springtime Inspiration

With the weather how it is today, we thought we’d bring the shop to you through the magic of the internet! It’s like window shopping, but in the comfort of your own home. Enjoy!

With spring decor it’s fun to add some colour and a touch of playfulness! We think the  boiled wool bunnies and eggs are so cute. The multicoloured hobnail lanterns are bright and cheery! We also have some sweet tea lights that look like spring flowers- they’re great for a centrepiece.

We freshened up the entrance of the shop with lots of green! We have  a selection of inspirational design books and  green blown glass vases. We mounted some of our vintage crates on the wall to create unique shadow boxes.

We had fun creating this pretty vignette on the left. We like mixing old and new and different design styles to keep things interesting. Our silver standing birds are sweet and add a touch of sparkle.

We have a great selection of antique side tables in the shop right now, and some interesting nautical finds.

We have a couple of these beautiful large lanterns in the shop that would work for indoors or out. We’re also carrying Reallite candles- they’re battery operated! On the right, a vintage loveseat that we had reupholstered with a stunning ikat fabric from Kravet.

Here’s a peek at some of our sea treasures and bath products. We love Tokyo Milk- a line of bath products from the US  that’s made from crushed and distilled essences. The packing is beautiful, and the products smell amazing!

We get so excited when the sari throws arrive to the shop. Our latest shipment was filled with bright spring colours and lovely floral patterns. These cotton throws are hand stitched in India from vintage saris. They add instant character and colour to the end of a bed, or on a sofa or armchair.

We hope you enjoyed your peek at our new spring inspirations! Be sure to come in soon and take a look for yourself!
