Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need an interior designer?

If you’re considering a new build, remodel, or addition…

    • You want a cohesive style flowing throughout your space
    • You know what changes you want made, but don’t know how implement them
    • You don’t have the time to manage the various tradespeople required for the job
    • You want someone to help manage the project for you – a single point-person who can resolve issues and problem solve for you.
  • When should I consult with an interior designer?

Ideally, at the very beginning of your project. Whether you’re redecorating or renovating your space or building a new home, it’s best to have an interior designer on the job from the beginning. Depending on project needs, Henhouse can connect with all the necessary tradespeople before plans are finalized so that the outcome is cohesive and meets your goals.

  • How does Henhouse describe their style?

Henhouse is known for creating soulful interiors that are layered, timeless and liveable. We love mixing old and new, incorporating art and personality that reflect the people who live there. We listen to you and cull your unique vibe into a distinct style you never knew was possible, we go beyond the ordinary. Quality finishes and materials are important to us as well as working with skilled trades for the best outcome. We want things to last and aim to create spaces that are classic in backdrop with key pieces, and layer in fun finishes to keep it fresh and current.

  • Will you be able to help me define my aesthetic?

Yes. Part of our early work together will be getting to know you, what you’re drawn to and how you use your space. Oftentimes, people don’t fit into one particular box – we are all multi-faced and we love that! Combining styles and influences is great, and Henhouse’s designers will work closely with you to make it all come together in a cohesive design that is unique to you.

  • How much will a project with Henhouse cost?

Every project varies based on the scope of work and size of the space. Our clients are presented with an estimated cost at the time of the design presentation that is based on your proposed and agreed upon budget.

Henhouse’s design fees typically account for 5%-15% of a total project budget. Here are some other cost-related facts to help you best determine if we’re the right firm for you.

    • Initial on-site consultation: $500 (first appointment to all design projects)
    • Decorating and styling budget minimum 20K
    • Total project budget minimum: $50K
    • Fee structure: Hourly rate
  • What is the first step?

The first step in an interior design project is the initial discovery call. This can be initiated by filling out our Project Inquiry Form. Once we receive your information we will contact you to follow up. This call allows us to get to know you and your project a bit more, and it gives you the opportunity to ask us questions pertaining to the process.

  • What is Henhouse’s process?

After the discovery call, we can set up an in home consultation. During the consultation, either our Principle Designer Sappho, or our Senior Designer Christine will walk through the space(s) with you and review your plans and wish list.

After this appointment, if you feel we are the right design firm for you, we can start the design concept phase. This typically can take 6-8wks once we set a start date.

After the initial concepts are presented and approved, the next stage is to source and specify products and materials that will be used for your project and flesh out the design plans and elevations for the tradespeople and contractors to quote on. This process can take 3-6 months. This stage is important to start to solidify costs, so that we can stay on target with your budget.

Typically most products that Henhouse specifies for your job are purchased through us and delivered to the job site such as plumbing, tile, lighting, and furnishings.

  • What are the benefits of having an interior designer facilitate the construction phase?

Henhouse typically works closely with your contractor throughout the construction phase. A renovation or new build has many moving parts and unforeseen changes happen. We have the end goals and aesthetics in sight and act on your behalf to ensure the best solutions are presented that meet our collective goals. Site checks are an important part of this step, ensuring that our plans can be followed as close as possible so there are no surprises.

  • How long will the project take?

New construction projects and large renovations can take anywhere from 1-3 years depending on scope and permitting process of your city. Smaller renovations (like a single room remodel), can be as little as 3-8 months. Refurnishing and decorating projects can take anywhere from 4-18 months depending on lead time for products (i.e. if an item is stocked, made-to-order, or custom-made) and project scope.
